As a member
A person with an academic degree who works in teaching, research or other similar duties at the University of Oulu or respective academic institution, or is otherwise engaged in academic work, is eligible to become a full member of the association. In addition, the association accepts student members.

Membership fee
The Union membership dues are 0.95-1.1% of gross salary, depending on the member association. UOA membership dues in 2015 are 1.1%.

Unsalaried members must pay EUR 8/month/member. Such members include:
* grant researchers
* persons on maternity and paternity and parental leave (unpaid period)
* persons on parental leave
* persons doing compulsory military service or civil service
* persons unemployed
* persons on fixed-term leave of absence
* students (without paid income or grant)
* persons on unpaid leave of absence for other reasons

You can authorise your employer to deduct the membership fee directly from your salary.
The instructions for filling in the authorisation form can be found on the Union website:
http://tieteentekijoidenliitto.fi/en/membership/membership_fees

UOA's local branch number is 009.

You can also pay the membership fee yourself. The instructions for the payment are on the Union website: http://tieteentekijoidenliitto.fi/en/membership/membership_fees

Grant researchers
Grant researchers are welcome as members of UOA; the membership fee is EUR 8/month. Grant researchers do not become members of the unemployment fund, but otherwise the membership benefits are the same as for members working on salary. The JUKO (Negotiation Organisation for Public Sector Professionals) shop stewards work to forward the labour issues pertaining to grant researchers as well.

Pension for grant researchers is organised through MELA, see:
http://www.mela.fi/en/grant-and-scholarship-recipients/pension-insurance

The unemployment benefit for grant researchers was enhanced with the new guidelines by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy (2009) regarding the application of the unemployment benefit to actors (workers) in academics and the arts. More information on the Union website at: http://tieteentekijoidenliitto.fi/files/188/Grant_Information_for_Researchers_2014.pdf

Student members
A University of Oulu student who intends to engage in an academic or research career can be admitted as a student member. A student member has the right of speech but no right to vote in association meetings. The membership fee for student members is EUR 8/month; for more details see section Membership fee.

In case of unemployment
When a member of UOA starts paying 1.1% of their gross salary as membership, they simultaneously join the Teachers' Unemployment Fund. The prerequisite for receiving earnings-related unemployment allowance is 34 weeks of salaried work. Other members of the Fund or members who are not part of the Fund may apply for benefits at the Social Insurance Institution of Finland (KELA). Guidelines in case of unemployment: http://www.kela.fi/web/en/basic-unemployment-allowance_eligibility

Pension
The UOA membership of those who enter retirement may continue despite the termination of their employment relationship. However, as the employment relationship with the University terminates, the membership fee cannot be directly deducted from the member's salary and the member must manage the payment personally in order to maintain membership. The membership fee for retired members is EUR 6/month. Instructions for paying the membership fee: http://tieteentekijoidenliitto.fi/en/membership/membership_fees

Termination of membership
A person can terminate their membership by sending a written notification or e-mail to the UOA secretary. The notification must state who is terminating the membership, which membership and when. If you send a notification on paper, it should be signed.
